Art is useful in that you have to stop looking at it with your own conventions, bias, or world view. It is visual language coming from another's experience, and you should attempt to understand that language. If you're successful, it will enrich your life since you will understand something more about the world in a way that you cannot grasp any other way. It is difficult to do this and most people view art looking for things that "they can relate to" which is the wrong way to go. The artist won't ever be speaking your language. It is important to let go of your experience sometimes, and benefit from other's experience. That is the value of art when it is appreciated.

No, it's not. Developing as an artist is not easy. You have to learn techniques and skills such as shading. It takes a lot of discipline, which is a good thing to learn in the first place. Just like writing is a way to express oneself, so is art. And art can be more from the heart, IMO. It doesn't have to make life easier to be worthwhile. BTW, if people didn't have a medium such as art to release their emotions, anger, depression we could have a lot more suicides, abuse, and people acting out. Art is also a creative exercise. Creativity is important, thinking outside of the box is hard, but we're forced to do so at times - to solve problems we have never come across, school projects/assignments, etc.
Also, we've learned a lot about ancient history because of the art they left behind.
Advances in art have led to advances in science. Science requires a certain creativity sometimes. Also, a lot of computer art is need to simulate and predict things in science.
And in terms of learning, have you ever heard of a visual learner? Art is certainly not useful to those who need to see something.

I do not view Art as a waste...Painting, Sculture, Music, Theatre...all these things can inspire, challenge or even entertain. Art makes life better in so many ways! I magine a world without Music, for instance.
What is your definition of an Ideal individual? I do not think that an Ideal individual would be Artless.

Man oh man- NO art is not a waste of time!!!! Art is everywhere!!! It helps me to create so I don't go insane and take everyone I know with me. Art is so important to ones environment. What a boring earth it would be if everything was gray and without form. Anyhow color stimulates the mind have you ever looked at the sky?

It absolutely isn't. Art is very productive and makes people very innovative. Art is a great way for people to express emotions that they would otherwise find difficult themselves. It also allows for a sense of accomplishment.
Although art is difficult and time consuming, it could also be fun and rewarding. Sometimes involving money

Art is a component of the human psyche...
You cannot get rid of it even though you may
be one who does not appreciate it...
Do you like beautifully designed cars or guns or
other devices or equipment ??
That is also art...
