I have always heard that they get next to nothing. All the money they earn comes from calendars, personal appearances, etc.

Yep, Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders get $50 per game, are not paid for rehearsals and are responsible for maintaining their uniform. It's probably industrywide.

Cheerleaders are paid $50.00 per home game. (This varies per NFL team)
There is no pay schedule for rehearsals.
Opportunities for paid appearances and shows are available
