I am a Chinese student studying in a university in the UK, I wonder if I could drive my car to France (maybe through the channel tunnel) with a Chinese driving licence. And a further problem with this is that: the original licence is in China under an annual inspection and all I have now in my hand is a duplicate of the original driving licence and that duplicate is issued by the Chinese government. Thank you for answering my question!

You can't. To be safe get yourself an international driver's license using your Chinese license. Tickets are expensive in Europe. Better be safe than sorry. GET an international license.

If you have a duplicate driving licence issued in China, then you can use it here in the UK for 12 months from the date you originally entered the UK. NO INTERNATIONAL driving licence is required. However if you want to drive in France, then according to French Law which I obtained from the Prefecture, you must have an international driving licence together with your chinese licence. If you cannot obtain an internation driving licence, then you can obtain a translation of you driving licence from you embassy into French and English. If you get pulled over in France and produce both your Chinese driving licence and the official translation, they will accept this.

Polish the car, put on a chauffeurs uniform and attach a couple of diplomatic service flags to the wing mirrors. Oh yes - and dump a sack of old rags with a black topper on the back seat and it will be mistaken for a senior civil servant - or politician! No one will notice the difference! And don't forget to shout at all foreigners so they'll know you're British!

This page explains your entitlement to drive in the UK, but I'm not sure about France:

Ignore the people saying you need an international driving license, it's not true, the UK department of transport lets foreigners drive on foreign driving licenses for limited durations.
