I am looking for soil I can buy in small relatively amounts at a garden store or somewhere similiar that doesn't contain very many nutrients.

Usually, the generic 40lb bag of potting soil from a hardware store costing $2.99-3.99 are as basic as it gets. Just stay away from the enhanced types with slow release fertilizer added. You'll know the difference by the price and the label.

Buy sand. Most potting mixes will have composted material in them. Sand will be fairly sterile. In fact, you may want to sterilize the soils anyway to kill any seeds that may be in it--I have bought potting soil for many years, not uncommon for stuff to sprout in it that you did not plant. To sterilize, just spread in an old cassarole dish, and heat at 200 for about 30 minutes.

I agree, a pot of sand is the ultimate in bad soil for growing things. It would be a great control and you can add compost in varying amounts to other pots of sand to see the improvement as the ratio of compost to sand goes up.

go to wal-mart or Home Depot and buy their cheapest potting soil.. it's not very good stuff!
