There are a number of free ways to scan your computer for viruses. You can use an online virus scanner or you can download and install a free antivirus program. I recommend downloading and installing an antivirus program because it provides real time protection.
If you want to go with the online virus scanner solution then I recommend you use Trend Micro's Housecall. Housecall scans your computer for viruses and spyware. It will remove any malicious file it finds. I recommend Housecall because it is truly free. Other online scanners (e.g. Bitdefender) will scan your computer for free but require to pay to have them remove. Go to http://housecall.trendmicro.com and click the "Scan Now. It's Free" link.
If you want to go with the free antivirus program solution then there are a number of free antivirus virus programs available - a lot of them. The 3 most popular are Avast, AVG and Antivir. All 3 are absolutely free for personal non commercial use - free for life. Anyone of these is a good choice. For the links to download these programs as well as other free security software, go to

try AVG.com for a free anti-virus program. It is very good.
If you know the name of the virus, type it in the Yahoo search bar and you may get removal instructions depending on the particular virus it is.

All of these are ones that I personally use and all are free.
AVG Removes I-Worm/Stration · BackDoor.Generic3.GBB and .GBC · Worm/Generic.FX · Exploit.WMF
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/tpl/v5
Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

Sure. And it is the only method that works.
You use your original Windows CD to format your harddrive and then do a fresh install of windows. This wipes everything off your computer including the virus. No virus can survive the procedure.

The ultimate answer to viruses, spyware, malware and adware etc which hijack Windows is to try a much better operating system - Linux.
I know it sounds a bit radical, and it is - but it's the long-term answer.
Here's a great easy-to-read Acrobat PDF summary of Linux which I found:
http://home.clara.net/oldpresident/linux/frontpage.pdf (about 500k - just a couple of minutes download on dial-up, or seconds on broadband).
