out of the ground with a cap on it. The cap is missing a chunk of it but it still screws on but when it rains water and stuff can get in it. What is this thing, and does it matter that it's broken, and if so, where do I get a new cap for it and what is the cap called? Thanks.

My husband has been a plumber for 31 years. He thinks what you are talking about may be a clean out access for either the sewer or septic system of your home. It should have a cap on it. He thinks you should be able to pick up a replacement at a local hardware store. He suggests that you unscrew the cap, cover the pipe with an upside down bucket (so nothing goes down it accidentally) and take the cap with you to the store so you get the right size.

This sound like a clean out pipe which a plumber would run a plumbers snake into if your sewer line got plugged up. Take what is left of the cap to a home improvement store like Menard's, Home Depot, Lowe's, Ace, and go to the plumbing Department and see if you can find a new one to replace it. If you're lucky and it's not to close to closing time there will be someone there to help you, if you can't get help go to the customer service area and hopefully some one there will help. Good luck.

dear 7ofus, sounds as tho u r divorced and you doubt the word of your X and he refuses to come by and attend to the problem...aft 31 yrs of the trade he should be able to remedy the situation bang!
You're either on septic or city sewerage, but sewer pipes are sewer pipes and they are not vented but at the fixture thru the roof. What you have is either cast or DWV plastic 3-4" sewer pipe, and the broken part is the cleanout cap. remove it and go to the hdwr store and get another. no biggie, piece of cake, you're fixed.

Sounds like some kind of venting pipe. Take the cap to a plumber's merchant for advice.
