Just watched the first star trek movie, Star Trek: The Motion Picture, at the end a new life form was created between human and machine. Sounds much like the Borg, but if the Borg were created by Q (you may correct me) , what is the new life form? Do we ever see it again? And who created the Q? What is there purpose, and what was the purpose in creating the Borg?

As I understand it, the life-form created in ST:TMP was more a blending of consciousness between man & machine that resulted in a 'higher' form of life that transcended the known universe. Most likely some type of energy being - but, I don't think it was ever really explained or that it ever showed up again in the movies or series that came after.

I don't belive Q created the Borg. I think the developed in the Delta Quadrant on their own. Q did, however, arrange the first meeting between the Borg & the Enterprise D in order to challenge the crew.

I have not seen any explanation of the origin of Q or the Q continum. I would guess, since they are a race of beings, they evolved in the continuem and travel to the ST universe as they please.

I think the Borg are simply an evolved race that chose a path different from our own. They accepted cybernetics and assimilation as a way of reaching their vision of perfection and you see how they wound up. They are a good lesson in what can happen when science is not tempered by wisdom.

Q appeared in the pilot episode of The Next Generation...he was the ultimate bad guy...all powerful, with the flair and arrogance to match..

Incidentally, in the Original Series of Star Trek, there is an episode called "The Squire of Gothos" that most trekkies believe, as I do, that Trelene, who is the main character in that episode...was early Q. There's a Wizard of Oz quality about Trelane that is enormously entertaining...

In the episode "Q Who?", Q punishes Picard and Riker's apparent arrogance by whisking them 900 light years from their position into the Delta Quadrant. There Q shows the Enterprise a life form that "is not a he...not a she...(and illustrates that) you're NOTHING to them...the Borg are the ultimate users in the universe, and they have identified the Enterprise as something that they can CONSUME.."

Guinan had had some dealings with the Borg centuries ago, and warns Picard to just leave and not investigate any further...but of course Picard stays, and 18 federation lives are lost..

(Incidently, that quote you might always see that has Q saying "well if you can't take a little bloody nose then maybe you should go home and crawl under your bed...its wonderous out here...but its not for the TIMID..." comes from this episode..)

So, the Borg were already here...Q just showed them to us..
They're kind of like "cybernetic organisms" that use cell sized machines to convert and dominate their host.

V-ger actually crossed an inter-dimensional plane...we'll NEVER see V-ger, Illia, or Captain Decker ever again...but that's OK....because they have all EVOLVED...

The Borg are kinda terrifying...they're like zombies...and they absorb their enemies, so if you don't resist, you become the walking dead...sort of...which is probably a human being's worst nightmare...

Just my opinion...

Thanks!!

1. Never see the Vger life form again.

2. Q did not create the Borg, just introduced them to humans.

3. Q was created by Gene Roddenberry, to sell Star Trek to new generations.
