All my life I've had no desire to get drunk. Over the last few months, since I reached 50, I've felt a strong attraction to the wine box in the fridge. In fact, I look forward to 4pm every day when I can start slugging. I don't actually get drunk, I just feel ....wavy. Is this common?

You are bored, and getting dizzy occupies your mind, Go out and run a mile or 5, that will get you dizzy too, and will occupy your mind, with oxygen.

At 18 this country considers you old enough to join the army, die for your country, vote, and be tried as an adult, but you are not considered mature enough to drink. You might title this point "Consistency." I'm not sure your point three is valid. If people under 18 are drinking in spite of the law, someone over 18 is still paying for the alcohol and paying taxes on it. Maybe you mean that people 18-20 will drink more and be a larger source of revenue? Or do you mean that it is expensive to police and prosecute 18-20 year olds for drinking and that money could be better spent elsewhere? I think your point one has a lot of little points in it. Perhaps they should be listed separately.

1 or even 2 drinks a day is common. Unless you feel a strong need to get drunk all the time its not that bad for you. Remember in some other areas of the world wine is consumed daily with both lunch and dinner.

Ask yourself a few questions... Does alcoholism run in your family? How much wine are you drinking (a glass or a "box")?

Even if it does run in the family, don't worry. As long as you have control of your drinking and you don't get out of control then there is nothing to worry about.

Hey, they say a glass of red wine a day is good for your heart...

Over the years your body has built up a resistance and a need for alcohol.

I think the biggest question is really why you are buying wine in a box.

Sure. It's just an urge, maybe a mild "mid-life crisis".

As long as you don't take it out of control, there should be no negative effects of this.

Cheers,
