The bagpipes really aren't as difficult as people would have you believe, and fortunately, learning to play the pipes is done in stages.

If you're not in one place very often, it'll be a little more difficult as you might not have a chance to get lessons. But even if you can only meet with a teacher once a month, lessons are entirely worth it. Pipe music isn't entirely played as written.

At first, begining pipers learn tunes on what's called a "practice chanter." Is a bit like a recorder, and even professional pipers play a practice chanter when learning new music. A good practice chanter costs about $60. You don't want a bad one. Look for "countersunk holes" or "large holes" as these will then feel like a real bagpipe chanter.

After a few months on the practice chanter learning how the music is fingered, a piper looks into purchasing pipes. They are fairly expensive, a decent set costing about $700 at the lowest. But again, a cheap set would just be frustrating.

The best thing to do is look for bagpipe bands in your area. Drop them an email saying that you're looking for instruction as a beginner. Almost every band offers free instruction and will know if private teachers if you'd rather do that.

Good luck! And many many adults learn how to play the bagpipes every year, so you're in good company.

The piano and guitar are supposedly the easiest. I had a piano, but that went the same way as the house along with the ex, and is the only thing I would have back. The most difficult would be a Bugle or other brass instruments for me, I just can't pucker up properly.

They are not only difficult, but they are not cheap either. You should go to a local music store and ask if anyone there knows anything about them. If you do choose to buy one, seriously look into lessons, im pretty sure its not something you can pick up alone.
