Good God how many people still get this worng. British is a group term meaning Scottish, Welsh and English as they are on the island of Britain.

English are the inhabitants of England specifically.

Irish are on the island of Ireland. British is not an ethnic group but a political/geographical term. Irish is never under the term British.

The UK refers to England Scotland Wales and Northern(As opposed to the Republic of) Ireland for those answerers that got that wrong.

England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland are regions within Great Britain(the 50 states in the US is best analogy) Much like in US they share many common traits, but also like the US there are many differences as well.

England is the region
Britain is the big Island
Great Britain is the set of Islands
United Kingdom is all land holdings around the world.

"The sun never sets on the British Empire" is an old saying from back in the days when they had land holdings in every time zone.
a common joke, was to add "because even god doesn't trust an Englishman in the dark."

english live in england. that particular kingdom comprises the southern end of the island of britain. british can be any subject of the queen living on that island, whether they be english, scot, or welsh. the irish live on another island altogether and have their own country.

the english, irish, welsh, and scots are of different tribal lineages. the differences used to be very clear but interbreeding among them has mixed their DNA a bit. there are no less than 10 different ethnicities in britain and ireland
