I believe that the "C", "E", and "S" letters stand for C-Class, E-Class, and S-Class, but what is the difference between these classes? I once heard that "SL" stood for "Super Light", but that was a long time ago with the 190SL and 300SL sports cars.

They just have to do with the size of the cars.
A=micro
B=compact utility wagon
C=small
CLS=4 door sedan (coupe style)
E=medium
G=big ugly SUV
GL= big nice exterior SUV
M=SUV
R=large utility wagon
S=large luxury sedan
SL=2 seater
CLK= 2 coupe 4 seater
CL= 2 door, 4 seater
AMG is a trim level.

According to MB, E means Executive and C means Compact.
In the pre 2000 models. C= the smallest and cheapest of the Benzes......E= Was the mid class and S= the Superior or the Top of the line.
SEL= Superior class, E=fuel injected, L=the long wheel base (4' longer)
SD= Superior Class, D=Diesel,
and yes, SL= Super light.
