C: is my boot drive, however, and when i tried to run cmd (convert.exe) it didn't work

Is there anyway to convert my boot drive C: safely?
I am running windows xp professional but C: got formatted to FAT32 because of the acer recovery cd i used (i got a new hd on my acer travelmate 290), and it some used fat32 instead of ntfs to install windows

other questions:
will windows still work right if i conver the boot drive C: to ntfs?
will i lose space by converting?
will i have to defrag?

here are the errror messages i got from command prompt after doing convert drive_letter:/fs:ntfs ----

Convert cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Convert may run if this volume is dismounted first. ALL OPENED HANDLES TO THIS VOLUME WOULD THEN BE INVALID. Would you like to force a dismount on this volume? (Y/N)
Convert cannot gain exclusive access to the C: drive, so it cannot convert it now. Would you like to schedule it to be converted the next time the system restarts (Y/N)?
----------
based on what command prompt said there it seems like it can convert C: to ntfs when i boot it up next time, but i don't want to try since i just got a new hd and installed everything on it so i don't want to go through all that again if i mess it up. Does the 2nd option (converting upon restart) really work? I assume the first message was given because the process was Windows so it couldn't stop it.

You can't use convert.exe to convert the partition Windows is on to NTFS. If you type in 'help', under the description for convert it tells you that you can't convert the current drive. You might be able to use PartitionMagic or similar software to convert the drive. I would definitely back up your data before you try to convert the drive though.

computing gadget variety/call has not something to do with it. WIN XP needs NTFS in basic terms, some in the previous working systems allowed the two FAT32 or NTFS. Win2000, WIN NT 4.0 and WIN ninety 5 supported the two. you're able to desire to have some application on your equipment that helps FAT32 or the equipment grew to become into set up utilising a setup disk that created FAT32 codecs yet whilst your working equipment grew to become into put in XP reformatted into NTSF!

Simply saying 'it didn't work' doesn't help us much.
Verify the syntax you used: convert c: /fs:ntfs /v

Answering your other questions, yes, no, always.
