What will they do when sanctions no longer work(but did they ever really work to begin with)? Or when they no longer have strong international suppport?

They used to look to the US....but that's no longer the case.

What does that mean for the US?..will we become isolationists at that point.

You're kidding right? The US has lost more Int'l. crediblity than at any other time in it's history and it will take decades to repair it and it will make fighting the war on terror that much harder because foreign govts. have little if any trust in the US. The US has become isolationists not by choice but by default (most of the rest of the world, except Israel, can't stand the US diplomatically).

The only thing that is causing the Americans to lose credibility is the cut and run attitude of some Americans. We are at war and this war can be won if the politicians will concentrate on politics and let the military fight their fight. Our credibility will be just fine if the Politicians will set down, shut-up and hold on, our troops will sort this garbage out and win in all the theaters they are presently engaged in. I have two family members who have re-enlisted twice in the Marine corps. They just returned from their third tour and have chosen to leave the military since the political arena has become so screwed up that they feel like they would be wasting their time fighting for people who do not support them.

No, probably not because the UN has not lost credibility, even though they had front row seats to the Rwanda genocide, and did nothing for the white farmers who were slaughtered by others in Zimbabwe, nor are they doing anything for Darfur

In Zimbabwe, the people are now starving. Irony, at its most sickening state, but maybe deserving state

The US lost a great deal of credibility during the first 100 days of the
Bush administration. The US alienated a great number of countries, including many of our allies.

Since then it has simply gotten worse. The invasion of Afghanistan was a high point, as the international community in general agreed that it was necessary.

However, the invasion of Iraq pretty much negated all of that. And the neoconservative agenda pursued by the administration has done nothing that is positive in the international community.

The error in identifying the axis of evil as Iran, Iraq and North Korea, combined with the invasino of the wrong country (Iraq - no weapons, Iran working on Nuclear weapons, and North Korea actually detonating one...) has put the US in a dire position internationally.
