Sometimes cats are sick when their coats are dull but sometimes it just means that they need to be brushed. My cats get dull coats on occasion and once they're brushed they're fine. Try changing up some of the food and consult your vet if there are any other symptoms.

a cats coat being shiney is just a indicator of it being fed good food, and that the cat is taking care of himself. If the coat gets dirty, it could be front a allergy......dry air in the house.....etc. I would NOT let the hair determine if the cat is sick or not. That should be done with just observing him. Also, some cats (like mine) will get a "flakey" fur in the spring, because he starts to shed more.

You can check your cat to see if he is dehydrated. You can grab the skin on his back and lift it up alittle. If it goes "back" quickly, he is hydrated. If the skin slowly goes back.....he is dehydrated and needs to see a vet.

It's best to ask your vet about that, but I think you're right: a shiny coat does mean healthfulness.

usually. If it's your cat you should already know if it's healthy or sick. If it's a neighbor's cat (or stray) don't trust it.
