What do these title mean?

they are titles of the french nobility. heres a list (in order) with their english equivalent:
duc (duke)
marquis (marquis)
comte (earl)
vicomte (viscount)
baron (baron)

A Marquis is a rank of the peerage. There are five ranks of peerage
Duke =Duke
Marquis =Marquis
Earl=Count
Viscount=Viscount
Baron=Baron
The son of a Marquis is an Earl or in rest of Euope its a Count

In the British peerage it ranks below a Duke and above an Earl (Compte or else Count or Earl)

Both sound like French titles, a comte being the equivalent of an earl or count and marquis the equivalent of marquess.
