One word--ignorance. If people took the time to learn about other cultures and religions, we would find it fascsinating instead of being intolerant.

usually people are intolerant about things they cannot understand properly- this is probably the main cause of discrimination. things we do not understand are subconsciously perceived as different/ other/ dangerous.
at the same time, some people are narrow minded and cannot accept variety, believing that whatever is not by their principles or limited knowledge is wrong, therefore intolerable.
in a world aspiring for high standards of culture, acquisition and techological advance, we progress in competition and regress as human beings forgetting to accept others the way they are.
