Martial status might mean whether you have been in the armed forces or not.

MARITAL status is whether you are single, married, divorced or widowed.

I'm going to assume you meant marital not martial...

Marital is asking what is your relationship status... single, divorced, married, & widowed are usually the common responses

Think of marital = marriage

The actual spelling is "marital" as in marriage status. Martial has to do with warlike status. The word "martial" derives from the mythological god Mars -- god of war.

It is not martial status.
It is marital status.
When asked about your marital status you are supposed to say whether you are
1. Married
2. Never married
3. Divorced or
4. Widowed
This reminds me about a joke.
A guy was filling a form where it asked, among other things about his name, age, marital status and sex.
He filled everything until he stopped at "sex", thought for a moment, smiled and wrote:
"twice every night".
