During her reign, Mary's weak health led her to suffer two false pregnancies. After such a delusion in 1558, Mary decreed in her will that her husband Philip should be the regent during the minority of her child. No child, however, was born, and Mary died at the age of 42, most probably of ovarian cancer at St. James's Palace on 17 November 1558. She was succeeded by her half-sister, who became Elizabeth I. Mary was interred in Westminster Abbey on 14 December, in a tomb she would eventually share with her half-sister. The Latin inscription on a marble plaque on their tomb (affixed there during the reign of James I) translates to "Partners both in Throne and grave, here rest we two sisters, Elizabeth and Mary, in the hope of one resurrection".

Mary I, also known as Mary Tudor was the daughter of Henryy III and Catherine of Aragon. Her reign only lasted 5 years. A staunch Catholic, she married Philip of Spain to create a strong link with the Spanish and to strengthen the Catholic faith in England. The marriage terms were agreen in 1554. She died childless 17 November 1558. Elizabeth, daughter of Henry III and Ann Boleyn was in contrast of the Protestant faith. She decided not to marry, although it is claimed it was her advisor's choice not hers. Remaining single meant that the heads of many countries sought to stay friendly with her in the hope that she would marry them, therefore creating a strong dynasty. Elizabeth also died childless and her successor was James I. Elizabeth could not speak near to her death and chose James (son of Mary Queen of Scots) by touching her forehead. The only legitimate sone of Henry, Edward VI, was a boy king and his decisions made by the Duke of Northumberland. Edward was a sickly child who died 6 July 1553 - this was also the fall of Northumberland who tried to put Lady Jane Grey on the throne in an effort to retain his power.
