Is it cooling at all? From your description, it sounds as if the compressor is trying to start, and going off on the thermal overload. When the overload cools enough, it will try to restart, but go off again on OL. This could be a bad compressor; bad start winding, motor seized internally, bad current relay or capacitor or OL. If it is an older unit, invest in a new, more efficient modern one. The cost to repair the old one may justify getting rid of it and go new. But if needs to be checked by a pro before making a final decision.

it would help to know the make/model and age of the fridge as there are quite a few on the market and they are built differently.

Trash it? I don't know, it sounds like it needs refrigerant, have you laid it down at any time? like to move it? this may have done it in. Have it checked out. $35.00 to check it out is better than a new fridge.

Is it level? If it starts when you shake it, it might be that you momentarily level it whenever you move it.
