I injured my ankle last wednesday and after a trip to a&e found that it was a grade 2 sprain (slight tear of ligaments but not severe). I kept it elevated with ice on for both thursday and friday and have been walking around a bit this weekend. Does anyone reckon that i could be back at school tomorrow or should i still not be using it normally?

You did the right thing - going to get it checked out.

A Grade II sprain means there are torn fibres in the ligament, but it hasn't ruptured. There could be visible bruising as well as swelling, and it will take several weeks to heal fully.

The inflammatory process that happens as a result of injury pushes fluid out into the tissues over the first 24-48 hours and this is why you should follow the RICE principles of treatment.

Now that this period has passed, the body is starting to heal the injury by laying down collagen fibres (fibrin), and the best healing comes by starting to weight bear at this time - so again, you were spot on by starting to walk at the weekend.

So for the next week or so, it's a GOOD thing to walk, and to make every effort to walk normally. If you can't walk without limping, use a crutch or stick to help take some of the weight, and within a few days you should be walking with a normal pattern and full weight again.

You shouldn't aim to walk more than usual - but aim for plenty of short frequent walks.

The ankle will probable stay a little swollen for a while - you could wear a light support for comfort for a while.

Soaking it in warm water now will help, or put a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel on it for a while in the evenings.

Make sure you wear shoes that accommodate the swelling and help you to walk comfortably - lace ups, done up proplerly to help support the foot, runners are ideal.

All in all, you should be feeling much better very soon.
Good luck!

Well first off all a sprain is a injury to the ligament, the ligament get stretched to far,and is either partially or completly torn, this is why we also put the ankle in a cast to rest the ankle and not making the injury any worse.A grade 11 sprain is mo9re severeand partial tearing off the ligament. There is more swelling and bruising.Yes you will have pain when walking, but you can walk but be very careful and you will find it will be very painful.Makesure you take it easy and i would advise you not to play no sports for 7-10days.Kepp the leg elevated if still swollen.Good Luck

From my experience of sprained ankles (too numerous to count), by now it will be safe to be up and moving. If you still find it to be tender, use some crutches for assistance. By assistance, I mean you should be using your ankle, but the crutches can take some of the pressure off. Make sure you also wear shoes that will allow your foot to move freely, and perhaps swell a little. At the end of the day, you might want to ice it again. So take it easy, but keep it mobile.

I reckon you should rest. You should not been walking around either! When i sprain my ankle after few days i started to walk.Wrong decision! I did not let it heal properly and today, after 8 years, sometimes i still feel the pain.

If you walk make sure you don't put any pressure on that foot.
Try also hot & cold application. What i did was one bucket with cold water and onether with hot.

I sprained myt ankle a few years ago, it got really swollen then was bruised for ages. It did take ages for it to heal properly, and still remained slightly weaker than my other ankle. I think it is something like 6 weeks for it to repair itself. Just go easy on it even when you think it is a lot better just be aware that it may still be weak. You will probably have to limp about! Ages after mine healed i was running about, and it just gave way and i fell over, so just be careful!

I don't think it's a reason to miss school...you can pick up some crutches at a pharmacy and prop your foot on a stool or waste basket while in class. Walking around at school is a lot of walking (more than you may realize), but don't get behind on your studies over it.

get back to school! with a minor tear like this weight bearing is not a problem, it may swell up if you are on it all day though so try and get it up on a chair while in class

If you were my kid, Id have you at the doctors to ask that very question and make sure you were not going to do any damage with full weight bearing...;
