I'm with you...I HATE that mint green and barf yellow....those being the few choices for unisex baby clothes was part of the reason why I wanted to know the sex of my baby. I would hate it if I ended up with a closet full of clothes in mint green and yellow...yuck.
You can find some white outfits that are unisex, but they're usually boring and nothing fun ever stands out when looking for that. I can't believe she said she may not use a gift card! That's crazy!! Who doesn't like a gift card!? I suggest you still give her one; trust me, she'll find a use for it....all mothers do!
Otherwise, don't get clothes....there are a lot of fun baby things out there that are unisex and are NOT in the gross colours. Look around, I bet something will jump out at you and you'll rather get it than ugly clothes!

You can get some unisex jeans. Winnie The Pooh brand is pretty unisex. Also look at bibs, some of them are pretty cool for either sex. Or get a cute pair of shoes that either could wear. What is also nice is diapers...Don't buy the newborn but the next size up-one may only use the newborn for about 2 wks. I loved getting diapers because you go through a lot.
NOTE: When buying clothes get a larger size like 3-6 months because a lot of babies only fit in the newborn for about a wk if they fit it at all. Plus a lot of people buy newborns so there are too many outfits to choose from.

Get bright colors like red, orange, etc. Babies respond especially well to bright colors...my baby LOVES her red clothes. Denim works for both sexes as well. As long as you don't buy anything too "boyish", you can also go with blues, browns, etc. Buy separates so the mom can pair items with more "gendered" separates (ie...you buy red pants and a white top...she can then put either with more "girlie" or "boyish" separates).
I didn't know the sex ahead of time, and went with boys/unisex colors....we had a girl, but no one raises an eyebrow if she's got blue pants on.

You can buy baby clothes in a pale, soft yellow and they can be worn by either. Or, you could get something that is white or cream color that is solid, or that has multi-color pastel accents on it ( like when they spell out baby with each letter being a different color. I'm with you on the mint green, I don't like it either!

White, multicolor stripes or dots, red-and-white, black-and-white, rainbow, hunter green (forest green), navy blue, "natural" colors (from off-white to brown), aqua or teal blue, and even orange! Don't forget colors that will go with yellow or green, because they'll get a lot of those items.
(I know because we waited to be surprised too, and I wanted to buy at least some of the baby's stuff beforehand!)

You could do white. Or you could get a little Christmas romper or something. Or write her a little note that says her clothes are coming after the baby is born, then pick some out after the baby is born and give them to her then. Or give her that note with a pack of plain white newborn t-shirts.
