I think the driving force in simplest terms would be just the need to belong. A lot of folks say they don't care what other people think, and were it true in most cases I would admire them for it, but I find that even the non-comformists tend to look alike. The people that don't conform in the long run tend to find themselves alone.

There's only two: MORALITY and the LAW. (Unless you mean economic and lifestyle conformity, in which case ADVERTISING and MARKETING)...
