Unfortunately, dial up connections are relatively slow compared to dsl and cable. The maximum connection speed is 56.6 kps (kilobytes per second) that's it. There is no way to increase it beyond this limit. However, most dial up connections never reach the maximum limit. There are a number of things you can do to insure your connection is to the maximum limit. You can manually tweak your connection settings or you can use software to make the tweaks for you. If you are not comfortable editing your computer's registry then you are better off using software to make the changes. By far the easiest software to use is speedguide's TCP Optimizer (http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php). Just select your connection type (e.g. dial up, dsl and cable) and hit [Optimal Settings]. That's it. There is no installation required. TCP Optimizer will prompt you to create a backup of your settings before making any changes. If something should go wrong then just restore the original settings.

If you want more tweaks then I recommend you read JohnTP's article:

"Tweak your 56k dial-up modem" -- written by John TP (http://www.johntp.com/2006/02/12/tweak-your-56k-dial-up-modem/)

He writes a great article on how to optimize your settings. He provides step by step instructions on how to use CableNut, a program similar to TCP Optimizer but more advanced, and TCP Optimizer.

An internet connection can become slow or stop working due to a number of reasons depending on the type of the connection. Many of the problems can be solved by making software changes or small hardware corrections. Detailed instructions at http://tinyurl.com/yl62gz
