I have an external hard drive that I have a bunch of data on but it has died and I REALLY need the data thatis on it. when you plug it in NOTHING happens, I have tried several diggerent external hard drive cases to see it it was just the connectors in the case but they all had the same result. If I put in a different hard drive into any of the cases it works fine so I am sure it is the hard drive....does anyone know of any data recovery places I could send it to to get my data back? OR does anyone know how to get the data off of the hard drive?
I have even tried putting the hard drive into the pc as a slave and it still would not work.
I have windows xp pro...no drivers are needed for this.
Thanks for the help!

Doc,

Try putting the drive in the freezer for several hours. Often with a drive that is stuck, the decrease in temperature will give it enough room to start spinning again. If that doesn't work, then you will have to employ a data recovery service. These are expensive. We recently had them recover about 8 GB from a 40GB HDD and the charge was over $400, but we did need it next day, so that was part of the cost.

It sounds to me like to drive motor is dead in your HD. Your data is still there it's located on the disk. If you are the least bit mechanically inclined you can recover the data yourself, purchase an identical hard drive, going to have to crack the case open and carefully remove the disk, then place the old disk into the new hard drive. Be very careful not to touch the surface of the disk! If you don't feel comfortable doing this a computer repair shop should be able to handle it for you. Good luck!

I have been in the IT biz for several years. I have seen this problem many times. Others have touched on a problem called drive stiction. This happens when the spindle of the platters gets stuck in the bearing.

There is a very easy, but temporary solution to get the drive to spin. drop the drive on the floor and this will jar the spindle free. The drive WILL stick again, but this will allow you to retrieve the data. Although this solution is a little bit unorthadox, but it is a solution that I have used about 50 times with a success rate of about 40 recoveries.

I wish you luck.

Losing data on a hard drive is the worst nightmare of any computer owner. However, some RAM/hard drive problems can be easily fixed yourself by using easily available tools. I found the info at http://fixit.in useful
