I have an early 1960's shower knobs and faucets. The knob for hot water is very loose, making it difficult to turn the hot water on and off. Usually I can fix this sort of problem by taking off a plastic cap on the knob and tightening the screw, but this piece is all in one and I have no idea how to fix it. Do I need new fixtures?

Thanks in advance

I've run into caps that are on the front of these, you can't see them they've been on so long they're part of the handle. Run a Stanley Box cutter blade around the edge you'll eventually find it. Pry it up and then change it. It'll be an afternoon challenge for you.

there will be 2 differernt bolts holding these types of fixtures down most of the time...
take off the knob, then find a deep well socket that will fit the bigger of the 2. the first one is a retainer which might fix your problem by tightning it, but might as well go to hardware store, pay 2 bucks for rubber washers and freshen them up while your digging into them this far. it only takes about 10 minutes per side to do.

Be sure to turn the water off, and de-pressurise the water pipes by turning on one of the lowest laying faucets in the house, which might be the ones you are referring to. Also remember the hot and cold water are on seperate lines.

I just fixed a faucet here in my GF's house yesterday ;)

Good luck, and if you have any more questions or details on this job, feel free to message me, I will help you restore them. Be ashamed to replace those 60's era fixtures, so I am more than willing to help you out.

Look hard at the sides of the handle , there will be a very small set screw that looks like a small hole , put an allen wrench dna take that screw out and it will be able to be slid back up further on the shaft

There is probably a cap on the front of the knob that you can pry off with a very small screwdriver.. Once you get the cover (cap) off there is probably a phillips head screw that you can tighten.

Can you get the handles off, Are there threads. There is a product called threadlock you can put it on the threads and them will not loosen. There are several different types. Do not get the permanent type. You may not get them apart. Get one of the non permanent kinds.
