Cheques ("Checks" in the US) were the only alternative to paying by cash up to a few decades ago. Now they are less common in most countries. They are inconvenient because you have to take them to the bank branch to cash, carry these bits of paper around and the banks have to do some sorting manually. It seems primitive in this age. Is ther anywhere where they cheques/checks have been abandoned altogether??

Many retailers here in Britain seem to have abandoned the cheque as a method of payment this year. Examples include fuel stations, convenience stores and some supermarkets.

Debit cards are probably the most common form of payment nowadays, I think the Barclays Connect was the first of its type about 15 years ago.

I know that in Japan you can now pay for things using your mobile phone.
I doubt if many cheques are used out there.
