It is NHL officiating policy, and mostly it is about protecting the referees and linesmen from injury.
So when two opposing players are squaring off, or throwing punches, the refs are instructed to wait.
Once the players tie each other up, or go down to the ice, the officials jump in and separate the players.

most hockey "fights" are to get a team fired up, get the juices flowing. if a ref stops a fight before it starts, there will just be a fight later on, so it's better to let them get it out of their system. Once a player starts turtling or falls to one knee, the refs will stop it, and if a player continues to fight then, they are booted from the game.

Hockey players can fight because the NHL allows this. One reason is because it entertains the fans. In Europe fighting isnt allowed so players will try to cut players with the skate blades when there is a big problem. Refs and linesmen let them fight because the strength and intensity of the players put them in big danger.

The NHL allows players to fight. The official can stop it right before they fight but as soon as a punch is thrown the official has no choice but to watch. As soon as one player hits the ice the fight is over and both players are issued a 5 minute major penalty.

They let them fight Until the Fight goes to the Ice, I.E. One or both fighters Go Down, because it's nhl policy to keep the refs from getting clobbered When two guys are Beating each other senseless.

fighting is a huge part of hockey. ppl want to see two idiots go at it with one another. and besides, its not like the two players wanna kill eachother. a good, strong fight keeps the crowd into the games and can also inspire the teams. the refs acknowlege that and dont step in unless the fight really isnt going anywhere or if the players topple onto the ice (which ALWAYS happens). so to answer the question, its simply part of the game.

it doesn't matter after they start thrashing at each other. as soon as the first punch is thrown they just let them release anger. eventually someone will win and they will both get a 5 minute major penalty. also if 2 players circle in fustration and if the ref doesn't see or the captain isn't out they strat bringing the pain. In the NHL players are allowed to do that.

Alot of times its just chatting, jawing before the puck drops.... its the result of smack talk. Sammy- you're a complete idiot. Could you imagine baseball players getting 14 stitches in their chin during the first inning... runnin to the dugout, getting stitched up, then comin back out to play the rest of the game?! Hockey is a tough game, which requires a super high level of skill and you're just being an idiot.

It is really legal if there is enough time, and if they both really want to fight. If it is dumb, they'll stop it. If one falls, they break it up. And if there is less than 5 minutes left, and someone instigates a fight, the person is thrown out of the game, and the coach is fined $5000.

It is at the discretion of the referees usually they are supposed to let them fight it out until someone falls or it lasts more than one minute, but if the ref wants to break him up then he is allowed to.
