I will try to answer this question without going into a discussion about "which one is better".
- Most "IT guys" work at corporations that have standardized in a Windows based environment.
- This means they work with Windows PCs all day long.
- They probably get defensive when someone starts talking about alternatives and bashing Windows based PCs.
- They see Macs as the competition and so, perhaps, they hate the competition.
- On a slightly separate note, big companies typically don't support a mixed PC environment (e.g., Macs + Windows + Unix) since that increases the number of diverse problems and support costs.

Most IT people have long ago sold their souls to Micro$oft. They make their living w/ M$ workstations and M$ servers. Much of the software that they want to use won't run on a Mac. Worse yet, they don't know anything about a Mac, and therefore they feel stupid when they see a 1-button mouse.

In addition, there is so much you can do with a M$ workstation if you know what you're doing. By contrast, the Mac (at least in the past) was like a "toaster" in that it came pretty much one way, with few options beyond that.

It looks like the Mac people are moving to free their wonderful O/S from Apple-only hardware. If the Mac could move to a non-Apple platform, as well as run all of the Linux/BSD software, then the combo of Mac/Linux/BSD will start to rival Windows XP in a significant way -- an M$ knows it.

Most IT guys are very logical people. They dislike anything flashy and do not make the system run faster and better. The Mac interface is very colourful and friendly, and to the average user it is helpful, but to an experienced computer user, it just slows them down. This is why most IT guys like UNIX/Linux, because its just faster to type out commands. That is, faster if you really know what you are doing. UNIX also don't have a lot of the flashy / user friendly stuff that IT guys consider slow them down.

In addition, most IT guys know how to use PCs and didn't learn how to use a Mac.

It depends upon what you mean by hate. speaking for myself (an "IT guy"); macintosh computers are not compatible with the rest of my network and are therefor difficult to manage.

Because IBM compatible machines are widely used on my network I find it harder to troubleshoot and support a macintosh computer.

People who use macintosh computers claim they are user friendly but this has not been my experience.

Probably because their training has been on IBM PC's or cloned systems. Different brands of processors speak different base languages. Intel and AMD use the same language. These base languages are important when a tech tries to read a data dump to analyze the reason for a crash or other inappropriate response.

Three things: it's not just IT guys, it's not hate (just indifference), and since Apple is such a small part of the real computing world, it's not worth hating them.

There are people who invest thousands of dollars in that junk, but can't get much in the way of software for them, since no one wants to bother writing code for such a small niche market. Not sure what to say about that.

I suppose Apple users are probably pretty happy when their machines are working, and when they're using one of the limited number of programs that'll run on their 'system'.

the most in all probability answer is 'product placement' yet even as it really is no longer the case, the writers probable put in an Apple because they use Apples themselves. Apple computers are seen perfect for prime-end pictures applications. i do not comprehend what the numbers are, yet in each and every pictures branch and inventive crew i have seen, maximum (if no longer all) of the layout computers are Apple. inventive kinds favor Apple, and that includes writers besides.

Well there use to be many reasons e.g. can't run windows (except slowly in emulation), they were expensive, had slow cpu's, can't run windows games etc ....

However now they use intel chips, nVidia / ATI graphics and can boot windows and run windows apps and games at full speed they are just has good as a PC because they ARE a PC !

Check out a recent windows game - half-life2 - running at full speed in a new intel Macs with core duo with ATI X1600 graphics:

Easy, things work, need for IT is a lot less.

But I suspect the real reason is that most know Intel/Microsoft machines but not mac's.
