Also your drive may be too full to defrag, try freeing up some space.
Like the idea of safe mode defrag!

The answer to this question is probably that you have a screensaver? When the screensaver kicks in it stops the defrag - disable it and you should be fine.

Other programs are interfering - the best way to defragment is in SAFE MODE, when the bare minimum is running on your computer.

Sounds like windows 98 or ME. Not much you can do except reformat back to factory settings.

Try leaving it alone... do not have any application running that needs to access (read/write) hdd and see if that helps.
