My personal favorites from the 90s, in no particular order:

1) LA Style "James Brown is Dead" (1991): I like this one more for historical value than anything else. It's not particularly good, but it had popular appeal and helped introduce a lot of people I know to techno back in the day. Video @ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cr_6q9DcSiM

2) KLF "What Time Is Love" (1991): I'm still a big KLF fan. They helped define "arena techno", and were so different than the standard "four on the floor" techno/house I had been exposed to by that point. They're just a fun group in general, with lots of good dancy songs and a bunch that are great to relax to. Video @ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TpR0TlV0TMk

3) Underworld "Born Slippy .NUXX" (1994): It was a tough decision between this one and "Cowgirl" by the same group. Both have great, fast, pounding rhythms and abstract lyrics. But this one has achieved mass appeal for some reason, and I can still catch it on mainstream radio on occasion, probably because it appeared in the movie "Trainspotting". 4) Orbital "Halcyon and On and On" (1992): This is the track the DJ puts on when he has to go to the bathroom. It's hard not to dance to this song, and there aren't any pesky lyrics to keep you from getting lost in the groove. Video of the original "Halcyon" (which is shorter) at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZcCuNTaqUEk

5) Fluke "Atom Bomb" (1996): Awesome tune to drive to. It shouldn't be much of a surprise that this tune was featured in the Playstation futuristic racing game Wipeout 2097. The video featuring a woman in a latex catsuit and purple pigtails doesn't hurt either I guess. It can be seen at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mIXyNeAmQ5k

As I guess you can see from this list, I was first exposed to techno music around 1991 by a friend who was into the Chicago house scene. By the mid-90s, I was more into industrial music.
