I am currently deodorizing a mattress.

What I used is baking soda. I sprinkled it on liberally and let it set for a few days. I vacuumed it off. I treated both sides of the mattress.

The smell is gone.

If you have been putting sheets and a mattress cover on the bed, you probably need to deodorize that. I soaked, prewashed , and then washed the sheets, etc using vinegar and Arm and Hammer powdered soap. The smell is gone from there as well.

Try putting the mattress out side for a few days or for the day. I but an old trunk outside for a couple of days and the musty smell is gone away.

Be careful with the spray freshener from your grocery store.
They can contain harmful substances. Try this and other sites for natural, safe alternatives:
http://www.rainforestorganics.ca/natural-air-freshener.htm
(This is for an air freshener, but it gives you an idea of the scents.)
This has some instructions for making your own spray:

You could try making your own blend or purchasing one ready made. Use the google string "natural linen spray freshener" and you will find many ready-made products available.

In addition to using the spray, I would try cleaning the mattress, perhaps with a steam cleaner, to get rid of the mold. (If you smell mustiness, although you can't see it, there's bound to be some growth.) Put it in a warm environment (outside preferred) to dry very well.

Febreeze works really well. All you have to do is spray it on the mattress and wait a little and the odor is gone!

I recently heard that if you sprinkle the mattress with bi carb soda leave for as long as possible and then vacuum it up. I haven't actually tried it but i know bi carb removes odours from the fridge so it could work. Hope this helps.
