There are books written on this topic. Generally, they say certain personality traits are shared among people which are influenced by their birth order. Like all theories of this sort, there is some truth to it. There are exceptions without a doubt. There is good reason for some of these ideas. For example, first born children tend to be more responsible. This is because they are usually helping with younger siblings. They watch out for and care for their younger siblings, therefore taking on a parenting type of role. Middle children get the bad end of the deal because the older ones are caring for them and the mom is caring for the smallest ones.

I don't see how these theories are relevent these days though, since most people only have 1 or 2 kids.

To some extent, yes. In most multi-child families, you will find personality differences among the children, and there are general tendencies for children in each particular position to develop certain personality traits. However, so much depends upon the parenting that absolute predictions are impossible. Another factor is how far apart the children are in age. For example, if the oldest child is several years older than the next child, he/she may feel significant resentment when the newbie comes along, and develop negative personality and character traits.

well the oldest always think that the parents hate them but they usually let them do more things than the others. They are usually the most responsiable becasue they have to like clean up after the middle and youngest. They also usually get blamed for crap that they didn't do and they fight with the middle the most. The middle usually feels like crap they are close with the youngest but hate the oldest. The youngest usually gets away with anything doesn't clean up after themselves, and usually don't clean up after themselves.

The oldest was held responsible, but is the weakest in resolve.
The middle made trouble to draw attention to herself because she was ignored in favor of the oldest and the youngest.

The influence of birth order on the development of personality is a controversial issue. It's believed that personality is influenced by birth order. Psychologists largely agree that the Big five personality traits (the Five Factor) represent a taxonomy of human personality variables. You can study the OCEAN model: Openness, Conscientiousness, Extroversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism.
