I know everyone says to talk to the doc but come on here you are the momma and you are with the baby more then anyone else. If you think that he needs a little something extra then try to give him a little rice cereal with him ilk but just make sure that it is a few hours before bed time. I started giving my daughter a little cereal at three and a half month. She was sooo hungry all the time and she is now almost three and she is just fine. She is not fat and she has had nothing wrong with her due to me feeding her cereal. She is actually healthier then her cousin that is a year younger then her.
Look mom you are the ultimate decision maker in this and if you feel comfortable giving your baby a little extra then you just do it then. There is no set rules that a baby can't do this or can't do that even though every one wants to think that there is!
GOOD LUCK!!

NEVER NEVER put cereal in a bottle!! This is a choking hazard! Your baby is not ready for solid food yet. He has to be sitting completely unassisted not just sitting in a high chair. Put your baby in the middle of the floor and see if he sits up unassisted for a period of time. He must not have a tongue thrust reflex anymore. This relfex usually goes awasy between 5-6 months. If your baby is drinking 8 ounces of formula every 2 hours, he is being overfed. That means he is eating 48 ounces of formula in a 24 hour period. He should be consuming between 30 and 34 ounces. Babies will suck because that is natural for them and some babies will over eat. You should really cut back on the formula some or space out the feedings. Give a pacifier or just entertain your baby in another way and try to space those feedings out to 3 hours. I want to repeat - your baby is not ready for solids yet. You may introduce rice cereal to your baby at 4 months if he is truly sitting unassisted and no tongue thrust reflex. Please talk to your pediatrician about this before moving on with any solids at all.

Introducing foods depends on his tongue thrust (able to put foods down the throat to swallow) not if he can sit up. If he is able to do this than you can give him baby cereal that you find at any food store in the US. Remember that once you introduce solid foods you should still be giving him the formula for most of his dietary needs.
You can also try thickening up his formula with baby cereal if he hasn't mastered eating yet. I did one cereal scoop (using formula scoop) for every 2 scoops of formula. You can "enlarge" holes on latex nipples easier than plastic nipples.
Also I think that at 12 wks babies go on another growing spurt which means he'll eat a lot.
Here's a food timeline from pediatricians that I went through (USAF)...
4-6 months: Cereal
6 months: Vegetables/fruit and fruit juices (dilute juice 1:1 ratio with water)
9 months: Meat
12 months: Dairy (whole milk for fat content)
24 months: Switch to 2% or lowfat and baby can have honey.

You need to be a bit careful - foods with too much protein at a very early age can harm the baby and can also lead to allergies to a whole raft of foods.
I know some parents will say "I did and my kids are fine" - but that argument works for some 60-a-day smokers too.
The World Health Organisation still maintains that babies should not have whole foods under 6 months. Although many doctors will suggest 4 months, it DOES seem likely to increase allergy issues in later life.
Three months I would suggest is too young anyway - otherthan perhaps the odd rusk.
More info can be found here http://www.homemade-baby-food-recipes.com/babys-first-foods.html and by googling with search terms like:

Start by adding a small bit of rice cereal to his milk or formula to thicken it and add more nutrition and prepare him for solid foods. After several weeks of this, you can start to slowly introduce strained applesauce and pears with a baby spoon, which can also be mixed with a bit of cereal. Add only one new food at a time and wait a couple of weeks before adding another new food. That way, should an allergy to a food appear, you'll know what food is the problem and can eliminate it. Good luck!

Base it on his interest. Does he watch you eat, and mimick what you do? Does he reach for your utensil, or bowl? I started my baby on cream of wheat because it has more fiber than rice cereal (she's 4 months). Keep pumping that way you still have a good supply if he decides to go back to milk. Plus then you can mix his cereal with milk.

I would personally stick to milk only until the baby is 4-6 months old. They can develop food allergies if you introduce it to foods to soon.
