The main context was the right to form militias and protect themselves from the "Government" not directly you have the right to have a firearm. The reason is at the time it was not imaginable that you would NOT have a right to own firearms. The reason for the 2nd amendment was to ensure that the new citizens of the US had the right to form militias without fear of prejudice from the government to disban them.

The Second Amendment was a compromise of Jefferson's. He didn't want a standing army. He wanted a well armed militia instead, so in case of war the militia would become the army. The Second amendment doesn't mean to defend yourself against the government.

I *believe* that during revolutionary times, people had certain impositions and laws placed on them and at times bad things would happen like homes being broken into and searched, trial by jury was denied in many cases, they were not always allowed to bear arms by fear of the British government... the Bill of Rights was designed to secure the rights that it enumerates, of which arms and the second Amend. is one because it was an issue in the later 1700's.
For some, it still is, to those who believe they have a right to defend their property, which IMHO, they do.

To lay down that the right of the people to keep and bear arms would not be infringed. It is preceded by apology, but 'right of the people' was the idea of the amendment and its purpose.
