I am trying to get my computer to work. It will partially sign up to the windows screen then, stops and the computer will not process anymore. This started a couple of days. At first, it would do nothing. We have open the unit and dusted out since we realized it was covered. Once we did this, it worked a little more. We have recovery disc to try to help, but it will erase all that we have saved on it. We want to try to get it to work and/or recover our data.

I would take it to a pro to finish the cleaning. Its highly possible that there is some heat damage to the components and/or CPU. In this event, they can usually recover your data by taking your drive and loading it temporarily as a secondary drive on another system. From there, they can even backup to a new USB drive.

If you do have cpu or other motherboard damage, weigh the cost of fixing vs buying new.

In any case, make sure that you get your old hard drive back. There may be personal information on it that can EASILY be recovered. The drive should be 'wiped' to military standards - not just 'formatted'.

If you're worried about loosing data, just take out the hard drive and put it into another computer but with the jumpers change it into the slave. Start up the other computer with this hd and scan it for a virus. After that, remove all the info you're worried about. Now change back the jumpers and put it back into your computer and look for your problem again.

It's very possible it's a virus. Did you try to start it into safe mode by holding F8 down while booting? It could be a simple as a power supply. Using another computer, make a boot disk or cd from the internet. I think the site is bootdisk.com.

if you have another computer, i would say remove the hard drive from this computer and stick it in the 2nd computer and retrieve your data and then format it and reload XP using those recovery disc.
