Is the book only important if it's in pristine condition? My books are for reading, not admiring. They are dog-eared, a bit swollen from reading them in the bath, have things that occur to me written inside the covers when I can't find something else to write on. They are mine, though, and won't be gone 'til I am. Then, someone will get a big skip and dump them all out. However, what I would not forgive is if someone tore out a page. That is the real desecration of books. Coffee stains? Can't you still read it?

I'm onto my third copy of "The Silver Pigs" by Lindsey Davis. The first sort of exploded after I came back from a holiday (I think the temperature changes must have rotted the binding glue). The second copy was involved in an unfortunate incident involving an open bottle of wine in a rucksack (which also ruined my camera and mobile phone).
I've deliberately defaced my copy of the Odyssey with notes and have to exercise some serious self-restraint not to do the same to my Harry Potter books.
I use a barbecue skewer to guide my eye when reading. I occasionally poke small holes in pages, not through pressing heavily. It's more to see how noticeable it is. If it makes a big hole, it's time to get a new reading stick.
At least I don't dog-ear pages unlike my dad.

I had this really old book of fairy tales, and I was re-reading it. I left it out on the table and went somewhere (I can't remember where anymore). Upon my return I found that my dog had chewed it to pieces!! I felt so bad about it! Apparently old books used binding with some ingredient that dogs like to eat, and my dog decided to have a snack.
I still feel terrible when I think about it, I try to be so careful with my books!

Happens all the time. Depending on the severity of the spill/mess and the book that got messed up, just replace the book.
I once squished a bug on one of my books; it leaked blood across the cover. Besides a permanent wrinkle on the cover, my book survived.

Yup, dropped one in the bath and when dried out it was NOT the same! Also some are falling to pieces but out of print so can't get another. My favourite books are old friends!

Not personally, but I borrowed a hardback book from someone. She gave the OK to lend it to someone else when I finished. I told the person it wasn't mine and to take care with it. She interpreted that to mean, "Shove it in my backpack with a banana and go hiking with it." Of course the heavy book bouncing around on a banana burst it and the book was covered with mashed banana.
