That's not true for anything anymore. The monitors of today are made with different materials that create sharper picture. You didn't sit close to the old one because the picture was so fussy, trying to focus on an entire screen caused strain on your eyes, leading to headaches and glasses. Todays monitors create such crystal picture that your eyes can focus properly. Plus if you sit to close to any monitor during rapid flashes it can cause epileptic seizures (especially in children)

The only reason I told my kids to not sit close to the tv was that their big heads blocked my view.

If their head gets in my way of the computer monitor I can whack them, since I am so close.

The concern was the radiation emitted by CRTs. I don't know that there are any particular hazards with today's LCD and plasma monitors.
