Before connecting any leads make sure the vehicles are the same voltage and that they're parked with their handbrakes on and ignition off. The vehicles must not touch as this can cause sparks or an explosion.
Use the red jump lead to connect the positive terminal of the donor vehicle's good battery to the positive terminal of the flat battery.
Then use the black lead to connect the negative terminal of the good battery to a suitable earthing point on the engine or chassis of the other vehicle. This earthing point must be away from the battery and fuel system.
With both leads connected wait three minutes for the voltages to equalise before starting either engine.
Start the engine of the donor car and allow it to run for a minute then, with it still running, start the engine of the other car and leave both running at a fast idle for ten minutes.
Do not remove the jump leads whilst the engines are running as this can cause serious damage to the electronics on either car.
If the jump leads get hot then avoid a possible fire by switching off both engines and allowing the leads to cool
Turn off the ignition on both cars and then disconnect the leads carefully in the reverse order to the way that they were connected.
Be careful not to touch the clips against each other or against the car bodywork.

Assuming you are fimilar with jump leads ie RED being positive (+) and BLACK being negative (-).
Always fit the RED lead first and Black last, making sure you have a good connection. When removing the leads always remove the BLACK lead first and RED last. When fully charged the battery will contain 12 volts dc power with normally around 400 amps cranking power, as the battery is charged via the alternator, it creates gases unseen by the eye and can explode if sparks are created. Connecting the BLACK lead last virtually eliminates this problem and once the car has been started, the battery will be charging and gases created and removing the BLACK lead last helps reduce the risk of sparks. To add to this, once you have the car started never rev the car to hopefully charge the battery quicker, If you rev the car it only allows the battery to take a surface charge and the voltage regulater fitted internally of the alternator cuts out and no longer charges the battery, leaving you with the same problem when you go to start the car after it sitting for a couple of days. It's always better to remove the battery and charge it using and appropriate charger or take the car for a good long motorway drive to charge the battery. Short journeys take more from the battery than the alternator can put back into it, You start the car which drains it, you then use the heated rear screen and blower motor to clear the windows and then you switch on the lights all draining the battery. You drive a short distance to work which only allows the alternator a short period of time to recharge the battery to it full capacity but isn't capable because of the continual drain of power by componants being used.
A bit long winded and informative though!

Connect negative on good battery to negative on dead battery.
Then positive on good battery to positive on dead battery.
This is because the metalwork on the two cars may be touching and the good battery (assuming you have just driven to the dead battery) will still be gassing off hydrogen and you don't want a spark beside hydrogen. Remember the hindenburg airship.

i never use neg on bad batt.. to keep from poss explosion.
some people do..
always have starter engine off. start engine after both batteries connected and then try starting other vehicle.
