I have a 2 yr old, work full time as does my husband, plus he works a second job most weekends. We are having trouble keeping the house tidy (and it drives me nuts).

Where in my question did I blame my 2 year old? I actually wasn't looking to be criticized, only looking for some time saving tips and giving some back ground. Helpful answers only please!

What makes you any different to thousands of other married couples. I don't think a 2 yr old can be blamed for the place being untidy. I think you and your husband should address the situation at source.
Single male with 2 teenagers for the last 8 years 4 bed bungalow large garden and business to run. I manage.

No darling you didn't blame you 2 yr old but the biggest time saving tip I can give you is make less mess then you don't have any to clean up. that way you can put your feet up on a night and snuggle up to the hubby.

Two years old isn't too young to ask the child to put away toys.(I'm assuming the 2 yr old is the main mess maker??) Help your child to get into the habit of picking up after themselves now rather than later. I'm sure you are a great parent because you realize this is a problem now and want to fix it. I would just make a rule to keep all toys in a toybox when it isn't in use and keep all toys in one room (their room or a play room) and have the child be responsible for picking up the toys. I remember growing up that no toys were allowed in the living room. I now understand why :) I'm just saying start them early or you will always be picking up after your children. Other hints, keep all dishes in the sink when you're done using them and if you can't get to them right away, soak them in the sink with hot, soapy water. That way you won't have to scrub so much when you do dishes. Their isn't much do do for time saving with laundry other than knowing the washer takes about a half an hour per cycle and the dryer takes 45 min per cycle and I usually multi-task (do cleaning as I the machines wash the laundry) If you our your husband have parties then the person having that party should clean up afterwards. I hope this helps.

Try getting your 2 yr old out to grans for the day then blitz your place do everything you can that you would miss ,After the big clean just do the stuff that needs done make the beds when you get up , put on the washing machine before you go to bed ,clean toilet and kitchen once a day and only hoover when you need it done and put things away when you've used them. Play the putting away the toys game with your child they will find it fun hope you can get it sorted out ,good luck.

Your going to need some storage contrainers and bins put anything you dont use daily away ie kitchen gadgets get a pantry and hide those away there it frees up your cupboards and you can see all the gadgets so it is easier to put them away when your done ikea sells great kids storage for toys and teddy bears as well make boxes for all your paper storage like magazines and newspapers this makes it easier to recycle and it will let you know when you have to many. Handy hint any thing you do not use daily put in rubber maid bins and label and put them away that way the kids dont get into them good luck and just make sure every thing has its own place.

*Do a little each day.
*Assign jobs among the household. Find agreement.
*Use a schedule. Consider setting aside a time each day for cleaning, e.g., after the news.
*Use a card file--a different job on each card/pull one at random for each day of the week. Mix it up!
*Buy pleasant/custom cleaners (scented not perfumed) so that cleaning is more enjoyable. Buy non-toxic cleaners.
*Have all the cleaners and cleaning implements on hand that you need.
*Keep up on the laundry. You don't want it getting in the way on cleaning day.
*Be more organized/eliminate clutter. Get rid of what is unnecessary and not used. Use containers for toys, books, etc., and use caddies in the kitchen, so you don't have to waste time moving things in order to clean.
*Leave room between items on the floor so the vacuum head fits between.
*When cleaning use a dry AND wet rag. It is amazing how much trouble you can save yourself by having a dry rag on hand for brushing away hair and lint and for polishing.
*If all else fails, consider hiring a house cleaner. Life's too short.

The Swiffer sweepers and dusters are my best friends..I also love the antibacterial spray for the kitchen area..just wipe with a paper towel and it is done..Baskets for the kids toys are also a timesaver..just toss them in and they look fine. I had a basket in every room when my kids were small.
