Hello, we live in a flat that has no sound proofing whatsover. The neighbour above us has a child that constantly runs around, jumping, banging etc, the noise is horrendous at times, especially in the evening. We are only separated by floorboards. We have contacted the local authorities as they are council tenants, but they say there is nothing they can do because it isn't going on at unreasonable hours, although, they admit it is very noisy. We have spoken to the neighbour and she is aware of the problem since she has sat in our flat while her child ran around upstairs!
We have offered to get her room soundproofed, but she won't agree, we can't force her.
My question is this. Has anyone ever soundproofed their home (simular situation) and did it really help?
Thank you, any advise is most appreciated, Sharon

I had a similar problem a few years ago. I lived in a downstairs flat and could hear all that went on upstairs.

We complained to the council and they came round with sound detecting equipment and then wrote to the upstairs tenants. Unfortunately they wouldn't accept blame nor would their landlord so things got awkward.

My dad is an architect. He knew of a soundproofing underlay which could be laid on the upstairs floors under the carpets. This could be an option for you (in our case the upstairs neighbours wouldn't co-operate). In the end we took down the ceiling plasterboard and inserted some dense sound reducing insulation (like rockwool). This did help a bit.

I am surprised the council won't help more, If the sound is unreasonable it doesn't matter what time it goes on. Are you council tenants too? Is it owned or rented? A landlord should also be able to help.

I hope I haven't waffled on. The most important thing is to try and not fall out with the neighbour over it. If she eventually co-operates, even at your expense, it will be a win win situation.

Good luck and remember you are not alone.

I had the same problem a couple years back but it wasnt just one kid it was 5 of them, but our problem was we were on top and they were on bottom and the kids would take the broom and poke it in the ceiling area and play loud music they even hooked there speakers on top of something that would vibrate our floor constantly we had a talk with them a couple of times but things just got a lot worse for us so since we were living on the top we decided to have a talk with the manager and talking to her was like talking to a wall. So we took matters into our own hands and did it back to them its not the brightest idea but we played loud music and stomped when we walked and stuff after awhile the noise seemed to calm down, so my suggestion is keep talking to them and let them know they need to stop and if that dont work than maybe the soundproof might work but you are going to have to get her to agree with you if she dont agree with you than just keep complaining to her eventually she may go for it. Good Luck on everything

Why do they even allow children in flats/condo ...maybe there is a loop hole and you should try to find out if there are no children allowed in that building (it is very common to see condos/flats that don't allow children) GOOD LUCK
