As a general rule you want the weight and length percentile of your baby to be in the same vicinity. So if your baby is long then you would expect him to weigh more too. 20lbs (9.07 kg) at 5 months is neatly in the 97th percentile, for him to be considered normally healthy you would want his length to be in the 97th percentile too, around 70cm (27.5inches) give or take (babies have growth spurts and don't just grow to fit charts).
Being in the 97th percentile means there are on average 3 kids per 100 that are heavier than yours and 96 kids per 100 lighter.
If your niece weighs 23lbs (10.43kg) at two then she is in about the 20th percentile (a little sort of girl) you would expect her height (for her to be normally healthy) to be around 84cm (about 33inches). If she is a lot taller then by the charts she is considered underweight... then again some kids are just skinny and some are just heavy no matter what you do.
Sounds like you should believe your doctor.
The charts below are fairly recent and reliable.
Hope this has been of some use,
Cheers,
Ruby.
Mother of a 97th percentile babe myself, 19kg 104cm (41.8lbs, 40.9inches) at 2years 11months. and he doesn't look at all fat, doesn't eat junk food, is super active.

Size is relative - has your pediatrician mentioned any concern? Is he off the charts as far as the growth charts are concerned? How long is he? Is he breastfed or formula fed? Alot of factors play in when determining ideal weight for an infant. My daughter was born at 8 lbs 6 ounces. She is 7 months and weighs 22 lbs and is 29 inches long. My pediatrician says she is perfect. She is still breastfed and it is well-known that breastfed babies tend to gain faster in the first few months of life and then level off around a year old. I have no worries at all about my daughter's weight/size. Another question would be, what is he eating on a typical day? Anyway, I wouldn't worry too much, most likely as he gets more mobile his weight gain will slow down.

As long as he's healthy, i'd say its completely fine. My daughter was 7 lbs 11 oz when she was born, and was about 12 lbs at 5 weeks as well. She's now 6 months old and weighs 20.5 lbs. Shes healthy though, and her dr. said shes fine. She's long though. 28 inches already. I guess she'd be chubbier if she was shorter, but healthiness is what matters. I'm sure you're baby is cute as a button, and healthy as can be to boot! If his weight were an issue, his peditracian would say so. Dont worry! enjoy having a chubby baby. i always say "a fat baby is a cute baby (and healthy!)"

sounds good. Babies are just little people after all, all shapes and sizes. My child was born almost 8 pounds & now at 4 months is 13 pounds. A friend's 6 month old (formula fed) is 14 lbs. (I think that's too small) How long is your baby? That factors in too.

Depends on his length, and whether his weight gain has been steady in relation to his length gain. The site below will let you put in the figures. It puts him in the 95-97th percentile for weight, but he could just be larger. Ask your doctor if you're terribly concerned.
The general "rule" is to double their birth weight by 5 months, and to treble it by a year.
My girl will be five months on Friday, and weighs 14 pounds. She was 7lb 15oz at birth

It depends on how long he is. Does he look like a little butterball? My son was a preemie so it is hard for me to judge because my son was only 24 pounds at his 2 year check-up in Aug. What does his doctor think?

most pediatricians go by the double birth weight rule. Whatever your child was at birth you double it and thats what their "ideal" weight should be at a year old. So your son should be around 15 1/2 pounds or so by age 1...I wouldnt let it worry you unless he keeps gaining more weight. My son was around 23 pounds at 8 months or so and he is a healthy sized boy at age 3.

Well, yeah he's a big baby deffinately. But its important to note also length. And some babies are just bigger than others. It doesn't mean there is anything wrong with him. It will go away when he starts to crawl.

Don't worry about it. A baby under 2 can't really be overweight. I love a chubby baby!! As long as you are just feeding your baby breastmilk (hopefully) or formula (not as good) and not cheeseburgers and fries everything is fine!! Good luck.
