no, marriage shows commitment. marriage means you have a partner, family, love, care for one another. it is a wonderful feeling to have that bond with another person and know what marriage is all about.

The reason that only humans have marriage is because you must believe that marriage means going to church and have the minister mumbo-jumbo over you.
Many species of animals ( the Canadian goose comes to mind) mate for life. This is every bit a marriage. The big difference between many species and humans is that when those animals unite, they mean for life. Only humans recognize divorce.
Naturally, there are many species that do not mate for life. Through the thousands of years many species have experimented until they found what works for them. Wild animals behave by specie. Humans behave by individuals.
Can we do without it ? Answer. Human marriage was devised to protect mothers and children. If all or most men raced around producing babies all over the place, but taking responsibility for none, who would support the mothers and babies ?
My answer to your question is yes. We can do without marriage, but first there's a heck of a lot of work that has to be done about support.
As for me personally, We're on our fifty-third year and would have it no other way.

We humans have cognitive thought and speech and writing. This explains the "institution" part of marriage.
There are a number of animals that "hook-up"
with only one mate for life. That's certainly a marriage without the written contract.
There are different forms of marriage throughout the world.Even today polygamy
is common in parts of Utah.
I'm sure we could do without it,many people do,
but marriage proponents will argue that it provides commitment and stability and they do have a point.
I personally believe marriage is good if your going to have kids, all kids need a Mom and Dad that are married.
Lastly,governments reward married couples
(with certain tax credits)

I have seen dogs get married on TV (the bride was a real bytch!), and I think I heard of some chimps getting married too.
Nobody is forced to get married. It is not a law. People "continue the species" without matrimony everyday. Whether or not that type of choice is most beneficial to the species is unknown.

not really, though people try.
We can, of course, 'continue the species' but humans are not just animals. It is a known fact that all kinds of diseases are spred by humans infidelity regarding sex. This is not to mention the emotional pain and suffering many people are subjected to because of this 'love em and leave em' style. Human beings need to be loved, and need to know they are loved.
So, no, we cannot do with out marriage.

there are animals that find mates they stay with til death. I think some kinds of penguins. Marriage among humans, in law is to say who can benefit from you and who can pull the plug. the papers is just that. In spirituality, it's saying to God this is who i choose to join my life, love and sex to. Because the cermony is just that. Not everyone gets married and not everyone has babbies with there husband or wife. You can do with out it if you choose.

Humans are the only species with a brain creative enough to come up with the idea of marriage.
other animals mate for life, but we have to put a sacred pact on it...
i disagree with the whole ordeal anyway...

I think that the notion of marriage is a parameter of civilization. To live in cities and habitate in groups requires a level of sacrifice. Hence being civilized. Being married goes against our primal instincts (at least I know it does for men). I think that when humans began living in tribes and groups protecting the mother of your children and staying faithful was required to keep harmony among the group. Therefore, in order to enjoy the benefits of living in groups, men and women had to make the sacrifice to stay with one another for their whole life.
That is just what I think.

In the initial age, humans also lived like animals.
The god has been kind for humans, to provide 'brain'. Due to this they observed , experienced and analysed their life. They felt the necessity to adopt some rules in their life accordingly. They lived in groups, i.e. religion or society or families for their own benefit. And for various reasons, i.e. fatal deceases, risk free unity, security and so many other benefits they framed such rules for their better generations.
For reasons, can animals tell or claim their father, but the humans can certainly tell their ancestors, and can get the benefits of it. They can get the love and affection, supports like education, food, ailments etc.
Therefore, marriage is the main rule in life of humans.
