Nogales to Mazatlan is around a 12 hour drive on the toll road. It will cost you about $50 total. Many towns and gas stations along the route. Very safe except for the occasional pothole or cow in the road. Buy mexican insurance and you will have to get a sticker at the border.

Over the years I have driven thousands of miles in Mexico roads are improving toll roads cost to drive on all in all much safer than secondary roads just get a good insurance like Sanburns ins. also Sanburns offers a good travel map and guide. I found you can do all you want to do using the bus system and don't have to worry about a car. Go have fun passport after Jan. 23-07

toll roads are always safer and well maintained..I would suggest to drive during daylight hours only, not only for the scenery ,but for being much more safer..
