Because a day is 24 hours

Because a day has 24 hours and you are born within 24 hrs of that day. just like there are 365 days in a year we do not say there are 365 nights in a year because that would only account for 12 hrs of a day.

The reason any word is so is a fascinating study called etymology.

"etymology (ĕtĭmŏl'əjē) , branch of linguistics that investigates the history, development, and origin of words. It was this study that chiefly revealed the regular relations of sounds in the Indo-European languages (as described in Grimm's law) and led to the historical investigation of language in the 19th cent. In the 20th cent. linguists continued to use etymology to learn how meanings change, but they came to consider that the meaning of a form at a given time must be understood without reference to its history if it is to be understood at all. The term etymology has been replaced by the term derivation for the creation of combinations in a language, such as new nouns formed with the ending -ness. See grammar; dictionary."

A good dictionary will include a word's etymology with it's definition.

Probably it is birthday because of how people lived in the past.

Most people sleep at night and wouldn't be interested in activities that take place at night; so the word birthday is used instead of birthnight. Yes?

I agree with Double O's view , we are just supporting the practice that we are doing rather find the way out to practice appropriate ;-).. I still see sizable no of people use the word 'YESTERDAY NIGHT' instead of mentioning last night ;-) ..... May be we living with our childhood learning practice ... SunDAY, MonDAY, TuesDAY... doesn't have Night ;-)
