and what qualities are vitally important for good communication?

2006-11-26 06:08:38 · 8 answers · asked by anyone 5 in Social Science Sociology

Several good answers here. I have trouble choosing a best one. I'm extending the question for a couple of days, maybe I'll let it go to a vote. I think of communication being only half SAYING a clear message, the other half being the all-important LISTENING and making an effort to understand. There's no communication if no one listens...any more thoughts?

Communication is not only important, but without it, human life would be non-existent. We have to be able to communicate on a personal level, both verbally and non-verbally. If there was no non-verbal communication, there would be no human reproduction.

I believe good communication is the key to a good relationship. If we communicate well with the people in our lives, we are able to better understand what the people around us want, need, expect of us, and what they are able to do and likewise, they will understand what we want, need, etc. This includes not just the people we live with, but our co-workers, doctors, service providers of many kinds...the list is endless.

The qualities should include being able to state your feelings, wants, needs, expectations, etc. honestly and in a clear manner without putting anyone down. When someone has done this, I feel it is then helpful to rephrase what you heard so you know you have understood their meaning clearly. If you have miss-understood something, this gives them a chance to clarify what they actually meant.

When people feel they have been understood, they feel like you value them, and that is a nice feeling.

Why Is Communication Important

My youngest child is autistic. At the age of 3 he wasnt able to say more than 20 words. He would cry constantly, he would bang his head on everything in sight. He was just a very fustrated little boy. Now at the age of 5, my son is using sign language, a picture book, and verbalizing around 200 words. With the use of communication, the fustration that my son once felt has lessend. He still has a hard time communicating, he doesnt carry on a conversation, but he does know how to tell us what he wants. Communication is vital to our survival. It allows us to state our wants and needs.

With every day pass, our country is getting into more and more trouble. The inflation, unemployment and falling value of dollar are the main concern for our Government but authorities are just sleeping, they don’t want to face the fact. Media is also involve in it, they are force to stop showing the real economic situation to the people. I start getting more concern about my future as well as my family after watching the response of our Government for the people that affected by hurricane Katrina.

According to recent studies made by World Bank, the coming crisis will be far worse than initially predicted. So if you're already preparing for the crisis (or haven't started yet) make sure you watch this video at http://www.familysurvival.tv and discover the 4 BIG issues you'll have to deal with when the crisis hits, and how to solve them fast (before the disaster strikes your town!) without spending $1,000s on overrated items and useless survival books.

Verbal communication is the way humans primarily communicate, so taking into account the person/s you are talking to and whether your intended meaning is at a level they can understand. Non-verbal allows others to verify any spoken communication, or make an interpretation of a situation with you. Also defines boundaries such as spatial and level of intimacy. Written communication - again, needs to be clear with the intended meaning. How you communicate depends on your level of intimacy with the person/s friend, ie, acquaintance, stranger and so on. Meaning, intention, purpose and focus all play a part.

You can see the value of communication in the answers. Some think it refers to equipment like phones, radios, etc. Others see that is the ability to convey an idea to others or to inform others. I think there is great irony that we have a massive media empire that spends its time misinforming the public, slanting stories, and sometimes outright lying to the public. In terms of mass communication, I think that the news media should be prepared to defend each story by listing sources and references instead of using things like "an unamed source" or "a person who wished to not be identified" because they often do not exist. Communication is important but not held in high esteem currently.

Communication is vitally important, particularly when applied to safety issues.

The first thing to do is establish who you are talking to, and let them know who you are.

Then state your message. If using radio equipment, or telephone, use the phonetic alphabet (alpha, bravo, charlie etc) to spell out words.

The recipient should then repeat the message back to you, if they don't, ask them to. This proves that they have understood the message.

Always use correct terminology, not slang.
