Well, southern members of congress did not establish the underground railroad, so that is out. I don't recall anything about any issue they had with "utopian" communities (although there was one in early Georgia that they gave a lot of grief to). They certainly were not promoting education for slaves as they were famous for laws prohibiting the education of slaves.

I guess (yeah, right), it was the gag rule.
