It used to get about 80 mbps. I thought it was running out of ram but I've got about 200 mb free. However, cpu usage is permanently 100% and I'm not sure why.

I think someone may have hijacked your connection, so they are stealing your better connection and you have reached a slow downlaod rate, what i recommend you do is setup WEP/SSID with your Router Utility tool so taht it requires a password and login name to get access to the internet. Also use a firewall on all computers you will use internet on because the hijacker could hack the PC and get the login name and password.

Get help from whoever you used for the wireless. It may just be the connection. I just got adsl and its at 54mbps on a wireless connection, I did have dial up and the max would be 42KBps ( i live in kenya) so at least you have a reasonable connection. Also see if anyone else is using the same connection coz on ours when there are lots of computers using the internet at the same time it slows down the internet speed on all of the computers - but it still says 54mbps all the times

You have two issues here.

1. PC running slow (or occupied)
: Strongly recommend anti-virus check and spyware check

2. Poor Wireless connection
: If it is actually connecting, then it's likely a poor positioning of the wireless adapter. Wireless adapters usually have a movable antenna that should be pointed towards the wireless router. Also there is a usable limit to the distance between the wireless adapter and the wireless router. I think this is usually 30meters. Also if you have lots of walls between the adapter and the router this can interfere.

Hope this info helps, i've also attached a useful link for more info on wireless networks.

If the CPU is that high then I would look into the task manager and check out the running applications in the back ground you should see something like 5% well you know. Then look for the one that has 100 from there deter min if its a system application or not, if not then kill it..

It could be that the reduced wireless connection speed is because a neighbor has started using a wireless network using old 802.11b hardware, and your computer is connecting to that instead of your own wireless hardware? "b" wireless goes at a top speed of 11Mb/s.

Has the name of the wireless network you're connecting to changed as well as the speed?

i bypass to assume that you're interior of decision of the router. the subsequent assumption is going to be that you've were given tried hitting the refresh networks button on your community settings. on your router settings, i imagine you may set your router to stay hidden different than for particular addresses, in order that may want to be the case. also, it ought to wish to be that your community card isn't correct matched with this kind of router (mutually with particular older community playing cards may want to not %. up more advantageous present day routers with more advantageous safe practices ranges)
