Discriminant is b^2-4ac

b=9
a=1
c=14

9^2 - 4(1)(14)=
81-56=
25

When you take the square root of this, as you need to do to get the solutions, it becomes +/-5.

The discriminant is always just b squared - 4 times a time c.

81 - 4(14) = 25.
