Oregon is the only state with legalized suicide, and in that instance it must be administered by a doctor and only in the case of terminally ill patients.

However, if you attempt to commit suicide, you will almost never be prosecuted.

I don't know about the United States, but suicide is a crime in Canada, everywhere. If you try to commit suicide and fail, you will be prosecuted and sent to jail. So I say, what's the point of suicide if you are going to mess your whole life up, either by killing yourself and not being able to see and experience the world or by getting caught and put into jail!

Suicide a crime. If you succeed suicide, what do you get, life in jail? Oh, wait, life, you don't have that anymore if you killed yourself. If you attempt it, that could possibly be a crime but I know people who've unsuccessfully tried and haven't been punished. I'm not sure what states do and what states don't consider attempted suicide a crime.

In the U.S. suicide has never been treated as a crime nor punished by property forfeiture or ignominious burial. (Some states listed it on the books as a felony but imposed no penalty.) Curiously, as of 1963, six states still considered attempted suicide a crime--North and South Dakota, Washington, New Jersey, Nevada, and Oklahoma. Of course they didn't take matters as seriously as the Roman emperor Hadrian, who in 117 AD declared attempted suicide by soldiers a form of desertion and made it--no joke this time--a capital offense.

Suicide is not a crime. Attempted suicide is. You need someone
to prosecute. a successful suicide precludes that.

Thank you very much, while you're up.
