They had fertile soil and their whole economy revolved around agriculture, and they had a whole system complete with slaves for it as well. The northern states had to indulstrialize for economic growth because of rocky soil and poor farming conditions. So 4 reasons...

1. Good environment for farming
2. Already had established system based on agriculture
3. Slave trade
4. Did not have access to goods from Europe for industrialization

The invention of the car was pushing the industrial revolution. The southern states were still depending on the cash crop of cotton, sugar and grains. It was the car, truck and trailer that industrialized the South with exception of Birmingham which was the maker of steel and was largest in the South.

They didn't need to! They had perfect land for growing crops unlike the north's rocky soil and cold climate which was not suitable for growing crops. Along with the climate and soil they had slaves who worked for free. They made more profit that way, they didn't have to pay a worker. The only reason the north had to industrialize because they couldn't grow crops like the south---they had to make money somehow. It was more profitable for them to not industrialize...plus they didn't have the technology.
